We have already presented the pants - HERE the review - and the Recce Shirt - HERE the review - of the new Arc’teryx Assault AR Series. Today we complete the whole thing with the Assault Shirt AR. The combat shirt of the new Assault AR Series is perfect in every way and perfectly designed. As we mentioned in the review of the pants: The Assault Shirt is essentially Talos Version 3, while the pants remained at Version 2.
The shirt is made by Arc’teryx from 60% cotton and 40% nylon on the torso and the valuable 50/50 mix on the sleeves and shoulder area. The material is heavy flame resistant and does not melt. For those who really need fire resistance, the Assault FR Set is now available - however, the set is only available in multicam.
All seams are placed so that they do not press or disturb when wearing equipment. The shirt weighs approximately 500 grams in size Large and is made in El Salvador.
The cut is typically athletic and body-hugging from Arc’teryx. The sleeves are anatomically preformed to provide maximum freedom of movement. Elbow protectors can be inserted from the inside in the elbow area. Here, the same preformed 10mm foam inserts are used, which are also included with the other parts of the set.
TenCate Defender™ 5.5oz mesh material is used in the armpit, just like in the Recce Shirt, which is flame resistant and provides ventilation.
The cuffs are to be closed in Talos LT Shirt style with buttons. However, unlike the predecessor, only Canadian buttons are now used, and the second button on the forearm has been omitted. But this is completely sufficient and there is no restriction when rolling up the sleeves. The cuff width can be adjusted with two buttons.
On each upper arm, there is a spacious pocket on each side, which can be opened from the front with a zipper. The zipper is provided with a long paracord pull and encapsulated with heat shrink tubing. The zipper can be threaded through two small eyelets in the upper area to secure the pocket against accidental opening.
On each side, there is a Velcro field for patches and a small tab to secure V-Lites. Inside the pockets, several loops are provided for attaching equipment. The Arc’teryx logo is embroidered under the Velcro field on the left side.
The collar is now back sensibly in Mandarin style - protecting the neck from chafing by the weapon belt. Also new is that no zipper is used in the neck area, but now a Canadian button and Velcro for closing.
The Assault Shirt AR is extremely comfortable in every situation. Due to the long cut, the shirt always stays in the pants during active movements and does not slip out. Whether wearing a plate carrier, chest rig, or backpack - the shirt is always perfectly ventilated and dries quickly.
CONCLUSION: With the Assault Shirt AR, Arc’teryx has succeeded in creating the perfect combat shirt. Just like Crye Precision, they are committed to further developing their products, and this is clearly visible here. No more annoying zipper at the neck, a collar for protection, and non-exposed elbow protectors: Everything as desired, even a fire-resistant version is available.
The Arc’teryx Assault Shirt AR is available in four different colors and in addition in Multicam. Presented here in Ranger Green, it is also available in Black, Wolf Grey, and Crocodile. The price of the shirt is 220 euros for the monochrome versions and 240 euros in Multicam, available at High Quality Gear (www.hqg.de).
