Everyone wants a helmet. Ideally one that is bulletproof and even better something modern. Some get them delivered through work, others purchase them privately. In pictures of various units, the viewer often spots the OPS-CORE FAST Helmet, which is not only good but also far from affordable. A cost-effective alternative is offered by Andres Defence with their ballistic replica of the FAST Helmet. We took a closer look at it: From the outside, the helmet looks exactly as it is known. Side mounting rails, an adapter plate for night vision devices, and plenty of Velcro - all in a beautiful olive color that Ops Core only offers on special order.
The helmet weighs a solid 1.6 kg and our test sample was a size M/L. This is the result of a thicker shell that accounts for the lower price. Still, the genuine FAST helmet costs around €1,300, while this one costs almost one third of that. The price trade-off is the higher weight: the LE FAST from Ops-Core would weigh slightly over a kilo in size L, while the XP with the thin shell in size M weighs just 764 grams.
The fit is quite tight: Those with a head size of 58 or above are better off with L/XL, as the helmet fit here, although snug, left little room.
The magic of the FAST helmet lies primarily in its interior, which is more than satisfactory here. The adjustments work perfectly, and the pads can be arranged by each individual for maximum comfort.
The Velcro used seems very high quality, as does everything else on the helmet. The shell is about 11mm thick, where the protection comes from. You can check the protection class on the sticker inside the helmet.
The helmet is designed with NIJ Level IIIa protection. This means that the helmet can withstand gunfire, but due to resulting deformations, your head might not. Therefore, it is classified as fragmentation protection and not bulletproof.
The interior pads are dual-layered. There is a thick, firm, styrofoam-like material to absorb impact energy, and a soft, comfortable foam. They are similar to the original pads but not identical. It's a matter of personal preference. For those who want change, the interior can also be purchased directly from Ops-Core.
Overall, the helmet is very comfortable to wear, but despite all the air channels, it can get very warm during heat waves. But that's a common helmet issue.
The rails easily accommodate all intended accessories from reputable manufacturers, although occasionally filing or tape may be needed. Replica rails tend to have slightly greater tolerances, but these can be easily overcome by capable individuals.
There were no issues with the VAS Shroud. Everything fit perfectly. It is made of metal and very precise, serving as an interface for GoPro, flashlight, or Rhino mount for night vision devices. The absence of the Ops-Core logo indicates that it is not an original piece.
The strapping is also easily adjustable. There is leather at the chin, similar to the original. The buckle works reliably. Initially, everything felt a bit stiff out of the box, but after some use, it improved. Adjustment is made with four sliders, one of which is visible at the top center. This allows for quick adaptation of the fit, while fine-tuning is done at the back of the neck with a few twists.
CONCLUSION: The helmet from Andres Defense is an affordable alternative to the more expensive models from quality manufacturer Ops-Core, albeit with slightly higher weight. The craftsmanship is top-notch, tested accessories fit without issues. The FAST look is spot on, and wearing the helmet makes one instantly feel more like a specialized operator.
