REVIEW: 2W laser training WLB15 "Wasp"

The Wasp from 2W-Lasertraining transforms an AR15 into an effective laser training device for hit verification during dry exercises. With easy installation and operation, it offers four different modes for versatile training options.

That dry training should be the basis of any sensible and perfected weapon handling is really no secret anymore. Even first hits, changing targets, and hitting speed can be trained excellently with it. However, especially in times of constant price increases for ammunition, one still wants to check their hits.

Enter the Wasp from 2W-Lasertraining. It turns a "real steel" AR15 into an efficient laser training device with just a few simple steps, that can be used almost anywhere.

Since hit verification during conventional dry exercises is not possible, the "Wasp" provides a remedy here. The Laser shooting system WLB15 "Wasp" is installed in the live weapons. For the AR15, the SIRT-Bolt from nextleveltraining.com from the USA is known, but its laser is too strong in Europe.

Since orders in the weapons sector from the USA can sometimes be very complicated and expensive, a German manufacturer now offers their own and technically better version of such a laser closure for the AR15.

With the WLB 15 "Wasp" from 2W-Laser Training, a locking insert with a Class 2 red laser is now available for target/hit training for calibers 5.56mm, .300 BLK, and 7.62mm.

The device impresses with its simplicity in terms of assembly and operation. The original AR15 bolt carrier is simply removed from the weapon and the laser bolt is installed in its place. The "Wasp" is centered in the chamber with O-rings.

The "Wasp" has a main switch (On/Off), two adjustment screws (Height/Side), a mode selector switch (Continuous laser/Laser as long as the trigger is pressed/Laser pulse when the trigger is activated), and a connector for the connection cable to the trigger. In the image, you can see the included spacers of the switch. They ensure that everything fits correctly on different AR15 bodies.

And at this point, it's very simple, you simply mount a microswitch behind the trigger using a magnetic closure and connect it externally to the laser closure via a cable.

That's how easy it is. It doesn't interfere at all and can be mounted in seconds.

The cable is then led up to the right side to the cartridge ejector and inserted into the "Wasp." This is quick and you don't need any special tools for it. German engineering at its best.

There are two cable switches available to you. The second one is intended to lead the cable to the laser bolt on the left side. It's nice that it's available...

... we chose the shorter path. This is how the finished setup looks like. Nice and sleek.

Now all you have to do is turn on, adjust the laser with continuous light based on the sighted optics.

Then set the mode for the desired type of training and you're good to go. There are four different modes available to you:

  1. Continuous on: for adjusting the laser in the barrel
  2. On-When-Pressed: lights up as long as trigger is pressed
  3. Reactive Targets: optimized for electronic targets of common manufacturers
  4. Virtual Range: optimized for virtual shooting ranges

You can "shoot" with the eye-safe Class 2 laser - HERE is our Basics article on laser classes - either on household items or conventional paper targets. By looking at the target, you can immediately see if you hit it or not.

Here in the picture we see the laser fine-tuned on a training target from the barrel, where someone can call out the targets to you: 1, Circle green, B, ... You can train so silently and simply in an undisturbed basement hallway.

However, things get really interesting when using targets that react to the laser. This starts with small sensors and ends with home shooting cinemas. A particularly wide range is offered by the company Laser Ammo, whose European representation is located in Sweden. We were able to try out the "Wasp" with Laser Ammo's "Smokeless Range." This is a fairly inexpensive version of a home shooting cinema. Laser training reaches another level with this!

One thing to note: the "Smokeless Range" works even better with an IR laser! It would be nice if 2W laser training would offer an IR version for such purposes in the future. This is also useful when using other sensor targets, as the laser point on the target does not distract you and prevents cheating during shooting.

The "Wasp" is powered by a CR123A battery, which lasts for 50,000 switches. Roughly converted into ammunition, 50,000 shots correspond to approximately 20,000 euros at 40 cents per shot. The savings are quite obvious.

An important note should be mentioned. With a long gun like an AR15 with a corresponding targeting optic, there is logically an "offset" between the barrel axis and the sight axis. What is negligible for laser trainers for handguns must be considered with the "Wespe" in the AR15. Since you train at extremely short distances at home, this distance plays a role. Especially when shooting at reduced targets, which should represent an increased distance. The laser hit is then always below the target. Adjusting the laser to such short distances (a few meters) with the "fleck" sight is not possible due to the design. The laser seems to hit the upper barrel wall internally before it could intersect with the sight line. On the other hand, shooting can be excellently trained with the system considering the "offset".

CONCLUSION: An acquisition definitely pays off for the serious shooter. The efficiency of dry training increases enormously. Especially in view of the continuously rising ammunition prices, the "Wespe" is an investment in the future. And guarantees a lot of fun during training. HERE is the "Wespe" video on SPARTANAT YouTube.

The "Wespe" is available directly from 2W-LaserTraining starting from 189.95 Euro or from CSC Arms Division.

The "Wespe" is exclusively available in the SPARTANAT SHOP for Austria. Also starting from 189.95 Euro, with free shipping.
