Foreign fighters captured by pro-Russian forces may face trial in the Donetsk People's Republic, with the death penalty as a possible punishment. The classification of these volunteers as "mercenaries" raises questions on international law.
There have been several foreign fighters captured by pro-Russian forces. Russia had announced that these volunteer foreign fighters will be classified as "mercenaries" and not protected under the Geneva Convention, but treated as criminals.
It is possible that Sean Pinner and Aiden Aslin, two British citizens, may face trial in the Donetsk People's Republic. The death penalty could be the maximum punishment for them.
