Michael's aim with this video is to give you a closer look at the term "mercenary." This is about the basics of international law and the laws of war that everyone intending to operate in any way - not just in an offensive capacity - in a war zone should know. Michael explicitly does NOT touch upon the laws of the home countries, which also play a role in such activities, as this would exceed the scope of this video.
The term "mercenary" is often used, as seen again in the context of the Ukraine conflict, to refer to individuals or groups who are not part of the official armed forces of the parties to the conflict. Sometimes, individuals who are part of regular armed forces but do not hold the citizenship of the respective country are also labeled with this term. In the video, Michael will first discuss this from the perspective of international law and use specific examples from both the Russian and Ukrainian sides.
Currently, there are already non-Russian prisoners of war held captive by the Russians - at least three Britons. The Russians have stated that they do not want to recognize these international volunteers as soldiers of Ukraine, but rather want to deal with them under criminal law.
