The PIRANHA 5, the newest member of the PIRANHA family of protected 8x8 wheeled vehicles from General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS), selected by the Danish Acquisition Authority (DALO) as a protected infantry fighting vehicle (APC), has reached the next stage of the procurement process.
After the selection process in 2016 and just 16 months after the contract signing, the first vehicles in series configuration were delivered to DALO. The dignified handover ceremony took place on May 17, 2017 at General Dynamics European Land Systems-Mowag (GDELS-Mowag) in Kreuzlingen.
The first seven pre-series vehicles delivered in the "protected infantry fighting vehicle" configuration will undergo an intensive testing program starting in mid-2017. These tests include extreme heat and cold climate tests, performance verification, and will conclude with a user test. After successful testing, series delivery will start in early 2018.The Danish Acquisition Authority (DALO) has signed a contract for the delivery of 309 protected wheeled vehicles PIRANHA in six versions (infantry, command, ambulance, engineer, mortar, and repair) as well as a multi-year contract for maintenance and logistic support.
PIRANHA - flexible for a wide range of applications
Adaptability, flexibility, and potential for further development were key aspects of the PIRANHA's vehicle design. Highly protected wheeled vehicles are now the core of deployable land forces, covering the entire spectrum of peace missions. The PIRANHA wheeled vehicle has the capacity to fulfill all roles including infantry, command, ambulance, engineer, mortar, and repair, with weapon systems of up to 120mm caliber. Its performance reserves make it an ideal platform for further development to meet future requirements.
PIRANHA - Setting a new standard for survivability
The PIRANHA covers the full spectrum of threats and excels as a highly protected wheeled vehicle, especially with its high protection against mines, improvised explosive devices, and ballistic threats. The integration of a state-of-the-art and modular protection system was considered during the development of the PIRANHA. This system provides comprehensive protection, particularly in the area of wheels and suspensions, which are normally vulnerable to improvised explosive devices. In addition to this modular protection system, the entire vehicle ergonomics have been further improved with energy-absorbing seat and restraint systems to protect vehicle crews from current and future threats.
PIRANHA - Highest mobility and performance
The PIRANHA 5 features the latest height-adjustable McPherson suspension technology, providing the vehicle with exceptional off-road capability. This suspension, combined with a high-performance drive, four-wheel steering, and integrated driving assistance systems, enables the PIRANHA to have the highest mobility even in the most challenging terrain, making it the most agile protected wheeled vehicle on the market.
