The lifespan of the British main battle tank - the Challenger 2 - is set to be extended. BAE SYSTEMS has taken on the project and given the steel giant a substantial upgrade. Under the name " Black Night ", the weapons system is now also particularly well-equipped for night combat.
This is thanks to the tank's two independently deployable night vision systems. This allows the commander to spot other threats in darkness while engaging a target.
The "Black Night" also features numerous active and passive defense systems that are at the cutting edge of technology. The tank can detect when rockets or armor-piercing projectiles are approaching and immediately initiate a counter-explosion. It can also detect when it is being targeted and automatically aim the barrel at the threat, enabling immediate engagement of the source of danger.
High-resolution infrared cameras on the front and back of the "Black Night" enhance its nighttime capabilities.
In addition, BAE SYSTEMS has improved efficiency and speed. The weapon systems now respond more quickly to inputs. At the same time, the tank requires less energy; it even regenerates some energy through regenerative braking systems in the turret when the main weapon is locked.
The Challenger 2 by BAE SYSTEMS has been in service with the British military since the 1990s and has seen action in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Iraq. The "Black Night" upgrade is part of the British Army's Life Extension Project (LEP) and aims to keep the tank in service until 2035.
HERE is the introduction to the "Black Night".
