Pimp my Skyguard

07/27/2017By Redaktion

Rheinmetall has received two important major orders in the field of military air defense and has also gained a new customer country. Two international customers have ordered air defense products and related services for their air forces with a total value of around 220 million euros. In both cases, Rheinmetall was able to prevail in intense competition against strong international competitors. The orders were booked in June 2017, with the delivery period extending until 2021.

In this process, a country was won as a new customer for two Oerlikon Skyguard 3 air defense systems. This is the third generation of the Skyguard air defense product range, optimized for the point defense of important properties and facilities and designed for current and future threat situations. A system consists of a Skyguard 3 fire control unit and two associated 35mm twin guns of the Oerlikon Twin Gun GDF009 type. Follow-up orders from the country are expected in the medium term.

Another country is already a long-standing customer and has now decided to expand its stocks with additional new 35mm Skyguard 1 fire units. The delivery contract also includes 35mm ammunition for the twin guns, simulators, related test equipment, and on-site training. Here too, follow-up orders are expected over a period of up to five years.

Rheinmetall is one of the world's leading manufacturers of complex short-range air defense systems. In cannon-based air defense, the company is the market leader and the only comprehensive system provider for fire control, guns, integrated missile launchers, and Ahead special ammunition.
With its proven 35mm Skyshield technology, Rheinmetall has set internationally unparalleled standards, particularly in the effective protection of civilian objects and important infrastructure facilities against terrorist threats.

For the German Armed Forces, Rheinmetall has developed the Mantis air defense system. As the world's most modern system of its kind and in use by the German Armed Forces since 2014, it can protect military bases and field camps from the threat of rockets, artillery shells, and mortar shells.
