Pimp my Marder: Warm, warmer ... Hit!

11/10/2020By Redaktion

Saphir 2.6 MK will be another element of the extensive service life extension for the combat vehicle. Rheinmetall has been commissioned by the Bundeswehr with another measure to extend the service life of the Marder infantry fighting vehicle. Following the recent release of funds by the Bundestag's Budget Committee, the corresponding order worth 27 million EUR gross has now been awarded to the Düsseldorf technology group. Existing outdated thermal imaging target devices for reconnaissance and weapon use will be replaced by modern devices of the type Saphir 2.6 MK (MK: Marder Configuration), a development of Rheinmetall Electronics. Pimp my Marder: Why the service life extension for the Marder is necessary.

Between 2022 and 2023, a total of 260 device sets will be delivered. The scope of delivery includes replacement devices for inventorying as well as corresponding accessories for use in the troop.
Rheinmetall manufactures the thermal imaging target devices fully in Germany with numerous suppliers. Modern components from the company AIM Infrared Modules GmbH, Heilbronn - a Rheinmetall subsidiary - ensure long-term significant expertise for German security interests.

The Saphir 2.6 MK has been specially designed for the Marder infantry fighting vehicle. The core technology is already used in large quantities in the Bundeswehr and by other international customers and can therefore soon also be used in the Marder. This results in synergies in the procurement and operation of the devices.

The modern device generation Saphir 2.6 MK makes it possible to significantly improve the observation range and reconnaissance quality during day and night. This is due to the higher resolution of the detector and contemporary display technology. The full performance of the components under all conditions is achieved through modern image processing software from the Saphir family.
Together with the integration of the Multi-Role Light Anti-Tank Missile System MELLS and new Marder driver night vision devices, significant tactical advantages for the soldiers in their dangerous missions will be achieved in the future, both day and night.

The Marder will continue to be used in the German mechanized infantry for several more years. International customers also continue to rely on the robust and battle-tested infantry fighting vehicles. For these users, the thermal imaging target device Saphir 2.6 MK is an important component for maintaining operational readiness.
