Pimp the G3: The stock by Hakan Spuhr and its history.

01/17/2021By Redaktion

This is the story of the G3 Stock Sassy, in Håkan Spuhr's own words:

I never liked the G3. It was always uncomfortable to use. I never really thought about why, but it's an ergonomic disaster.

Anyway, I have a G3 in my collection and for some reason, in 2012, I spent a lot of time with it and played around. That's when I realized that the stock is way too long, and the result is the G3 Cheekbone Chruncher!

There is a hump in the stock that torments the face in the prone position. The reason for this shape was the mistake of using low-profile iron sights!

If a high sight like the M16 had been used, the G3 would never have become the ergonomic disaster it is.

You can easily see with shooters that the original stock is absolutely awful and way too long, as most users use the so-called "rookie grip," supporting the hand on the magazine.

This is the body's natural reaction when the length of pull is too long to place the supporting hand further back.

I had a German wooden stock at home: I put it under the band saw, cut it by 5-7 cm, and trimmed the cheekpiece. Then I roughly glued a piece of wood and roughly sanded it with the belt.

I called a friend, and we met at the shooting range. We were both immediately very satisfied with the handling of the weapon.

When I got back home, I made an adapter so I could install a standard AR15 buffer tube and a Magpul stock on the G3.

But since the cheek rest on the G3 was the most annoying, I had to position the buffer tube as high as possible to kill the cheek rest.

The downside was that there was no room left for the buffer, so I made a simple rubber buffer.

We shot a lot with it and made a video so people could see the effect of good stock placement.

In the years 2015-2016, the Swedish army became interested in us and launched a tender that we won. It's great when you can identify a problem and then provide the solution.

But in the tender, it was a MUST requirement to use the original buffer. That was really annoying because I had little time and had to design a completely new stock that accommodated the buffer. But with the hump and stock cap much higher.

The result was adopted, and a few years later, the Portuguese Navy and the German Federal Police followed suit on their MP5s.

I think it was a success, but of course, one can always argue that it should have been a folding stock instead. The thing is, when a weapon is upgraded, costs must be kept low to be accepted.
