M3 is not an official designation for this Kalashnikov. In the run-up to the introduction of the new Ratnik system in the Russian army, the modernization of long weapons was also considered - and initially the economical option was chosen, as is the case with almost every army. The basic idea was to pimp the standard AK74M weapon with a modernization kit. This was intended to connect the weapon more closely to the modularity of Western weapons: rails, a better grip, and a folding stock with an interchangeable sliding stock. The internal workings of the AK74M were not changed in the process.
