PenCott®: New camouflage patterns

01/15/2021By Redaktion

If you follow PenCott® Camouflage on Social Media, you have recently seen pictures of two new camouflage patterns that were developed primarily for North American environments. The patterns are called DevilDog™ and LeatherNeck™, both are 4-color variations of the standard PenCott® pattern geometry and were named after popular nicknames for members of the US Marine Corps - because the founder and CEO of 0241Tactical is a USMC Veteran.

DevilDog™ is specifically designed for highlands, bush deserts, dry bushland, and similar terrains with light, sandy soil and sparse vegetation.

LeatherNeck™, on the other hand, is designed for more moderate terrain with a high proportion of brown tones - such as pine forests, mixed forests with reddish soil, and so on.

Developing new pattern colors in times of lockdowns and other restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic has required a certain level of flexibility and creativity in the approach - not least because all work had to be done virtually between team members in the UK and the USA.

The starting point was the analysis of current military camouflage patterns that have proven themselves in North American environments - such as AOR-Universal, MARPAT-Temperate Woodland, CADPAT-Intermediate, Scorpion W2, etc.. They were comparatively analyzed within those specific types of environments we wanted to address. With this data in hand, the PenCott® team created a range of potential colors that fit ideally, integrated them into the PenCott® geometry, and then worked through numerous color combinations to make a pre-selection of pattern variants. Using an extensive picture-in-picture analysis, a color variant was finally found for each pattern that appeared to be the best option – and also deserved its respective name.

Once the colors and names were set, the artwork was sent to 0241Tactical's digital printing partner in the USA, and a small test series of each pattern was printed on Ripstop Polyester material. The result is now visible in the form of anoraks, neck gaiters, and beanies that are currently offered through 0241Tactical.

As these garments are now being worn in the real world, PenCott® can check whether the colors are correct or if they need further optimization before being released for licensing and/or production with other partners. 0241Tactical will also be able to provide various digitally printed fabrics, such as 500D Cordura® Nylon, in the DevilDog and LeatherNeck patterns to other manufacturers as well.

Meanwhile, a new and expanded range of GreenZone® fabrics and product partners is set for launch in early 2021, the range of MetroPolis® patterns will be expanded to include webbing and 500D Nylon (along with additional product partners), and Helikon-Tex and Direct Action are also expanding their WildWood® ranges.
