PATCHOLOGY: Sheesh!

The term "sheesh" has been in American usage since 1955 and is an expression of amazement. It can mean "my goodness" or "oops" and may derive from "Jeez" or "Jesus". Exclusive at SPARTANAT SHOP, a Sheesh patch. Find out more about the term in an article by FAZ on youth words of 2021.

Sheesh: Not actually a new word in American usage: The word was already used in 1955 according to Merriam-Webster. However, actor Art Carney already sang the song "Sheesh, what a Grouch!" in 1954. Then as now, "sheesh" is an expression of amazement - both negative and positive. Translated roughly: "My goodness," "oops," or "really". It is not clear where the term comes from: It could be a variation of "Jeez" - meaning "Jesus". - says the FAZ in an article about the youth words of 2021.
