On the Path to the Future

After 15 years of dedicated work on BLACK POWDER RED EARTH, starting over with something completely new was a major challenge for Jon Chang and his team. Vast amounts of research and dozens of discarded concepts were just the tip of the iceberg. Yet despite a completely different world-building framework—based on a 20-year time frame—their new work bears more than just a passing resemblance to “Black Powder Red Earth.”

NEAR PRESENT is characterized by the same level of authenticity and attention to detail in its depiction of conflict as BLACK POWDER RED EARTH. Nothing in the story is the result of chance or writing simply “to make the movie happen.” They’ve published an abridged “Conflict Bible” on their website to give you insights into the setting and its further development. Spoiler alert: It’s not going well.

NEAR PRESENT is, in other words, the future. The complete core rulebook with rules for a 28-mm game will be published by NOVAOpen, and the first chapter of the comic will follow shortly thereafter. Currently available are a model series in 28 mm and 1:35 scales, as well as our FFI patches.
