Officially: France is looking for the successor to the FAMAS.
The French Army has initiated a tender for replacing the FAMAS with 45,000 long and short assault rifles each. This move could potentially eliminate the FAMAS FELIN from contention, opening the door for FN SCAR or HK416 to replace it.
After being rumored for a long time, last month finally the tender for a replacement of the FAMAS in the French Army began. 45,000 assault rifles are to be procured in a long version and another 45,000 in a short one. The standard and short versions are surprising, as this could mean that the FAMAS FELIN (pictured above) is out of the running, clearing the way for the FN SCAR or HK416, both of which are in use with the French Special Forces (COS).
