With the end of the NATO mission in Afghanistan, the Austrian engagement in the country at the Hindu Kush also comes to an end. "In together, out together" was probably also the motto of the Russians in the country. Most recently, an Austrian Armed Forces contingent was significantly and successfully involved in training Afghan troops, who will now take on the fight against the Taliban alone.
On June 6, the red-white-red flag was lowered in Kabul and then safely brought home. While the 20-year German engagement in Afghanistan feels more like a German Vietnam experience, the Austrians return symbolically undefeated to the Alpine republic. The confidence is also evident in the ceremonial farewell.
