NFM: Ballistic plates for Canada

11/08/2023By Redaktion

The NFM Group has entered into a fresh partnership with the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) and Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC): the goal is to design and develop innovative hard ballistic plates.

The contract awarded in September 2023 initiates a two-year development phase, with the first delivery scheduled for 2025. As a forward-looking measure, the contract also includes a provision that allows for a seamless transition to an immediate, pre-approved procurement upon successful completion of the development phase. This avoids potential gaps in delivery schedules and ensures that members of CANSOFCOM are equipped with the latest protective gear without delay.

“We are very honored to collaborate with CANSOFCOM and DRDC,” emphasizes Cyril Veillat, Director of Body Armor Systems in the Product Integration Division of NFM, “we aim to together redefine the future of ballistic protective equipment. This contract is a testament to the commitment of the NFM Group to innovation and our relentless pursuit of protection for those on the front lines.”

The NFM Group shares the core belief of CANSOFCOM that the most valuable resource of the armed forces is their personnel. As diversity within the Canadian Armed Forces continues to grow, there is an increasing need for ballistic plates that are suitable for a variety of body types.

“Our new hard ballistic plates are made from state-of-the-art materials and feature a revolutionary multi-curve design that adapts to various body shapes, especially female,” Veillat says. This improves fit and protection, safeguarding vital organs and areas more effectively. Additionally, the new shields are lighter, enhancing comfort, mobility, and functionality in different roles, missions, and threat levels.

The design process will be data-driven and incorporate anthropometric data of different body types, leveraging the comprehensive expertise of DRDC in personal protection and utilizing laboratory testing infrastructure. “Rigorous pre- and post-purchase tests will confirm that the new protective shields meet or even exceed requirements,” explains Cyril Veillat, Director of Body Armor Systems at the NFM Group, regarding pushing the ballistic limits.

NFM's Advanced Ballistic Capabilities

The vision of the NFM Group is to protect humans from human and natural threats, regardless of the environment. Since 2006, the NFM Ballistics Division has specialized in developing a wide range of ballistic protection, ranging from soft to hard plates to trauma protection.
