IEA Mil-Optics has been offering the multifunctional thermal imaging device L3-LWTS-LR (Long Range) since the beginning of the year, as a supplement to the previous L3-LWTS. The predecessor, the L3-CNVD/T3, has been in use for many years with the Bundeswehr and their special forces, proving itself with its reliability.
L3 Insight is one of the most experienced US manufacturers in the field of uncooled thermal imaging devices. The manufacturer has now managed to penetrate performance dimensions that were previously only reserved for cooled devices with uncooled devices. At the same time, the size and weight have been further reduced, and energy management has been improved through shorter readiness times and lower power consumption. The runtime with 4 AA batteries is over 10 hours.
The device has a bolometer with a resolution of 640×480/17µm and can be used as a standalone or clip-on targeting device as well as a handheld observation device. Detecting persons (1.5m x 0.5m) is possible with this new LWTS-LR up to 4,000m (LWTS approx. 2,000m), and recognizing persons up to 1,000m (LWTS up to 500m). The LWTS has been introduced with around 7,000 units so far in the key US military units (Army, Marine Corps, Navy) and also in some other NATO countries. This thermal imaging device can be used on assault rifles as well as on machine guns up to .50 caliber. However, the device can best demonstrate its strengths on DMR weapons and long-range sniper rifles.
