New SAW for the USMC

07/14/2011By Redaktion

The United States Marine Corps will transition from the M249 in the role of Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). Instead, the M27 from Heckler & Koch will be introduced. The reasons mentioned for this change include improved accuracy, reliability, and more than halved weight. By summer 2013, all 4,476 units are expected to be introduced. However, each company will retain 9 units of M249 for enhanced fire support.
