New SAW for the USMC

The US Marine Corps is transitioning from the M249 to the M27 as the Squad Automatic Weapon due to improved accuracy, reliability, and reduced weight. All 4,476 units are expected to be introduced by summer 2013, with each company retaining 9 M249 units for enhanced fire support.

The United States Marine Corps will transition from the M249 in the role of Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). Instead, the M27 from Heckler & Koch will be introduced. The reasons mentioned for this change include improved accuracy, reliability, and more than halved weight. By summer 2013, all 4,476 units are expected to be introduced. However, each company will retain 9 units of M249 for enhanced fire support.
