New Radar: Rheinmetall presents AMMR

04/04/2022By Redaktion

Rheinmetall has unveiled the latest radar system of the group with the Oerlikon AMMR. The Oerlikon AESA Multi-Mission Radar (AMMR) was developed entirely at Rheinmetall Italia in Rome, once again highlighting the role of the Italian subsidiary as Rheinmetall's radar house. The new radar is ready for series production.

With the new radar, Rheinmetall is responding to the most modern and demanding threats in the area of SHORAD and VSHORAD (Short and Very Short Range Air Defence). These include mini and micro drones (UAS - Unmanned Aerial Systems), rockets and mortar threats attacking from steep angles (RAM), as well as air-to-ground weapons and cruise missiles. All of these threats are successfully detected and processed by the new Oerlikon AMMR. Thanks to adaptive, fully digital beamforming techniques in the S-band, the Oerlikon AMMR automatically detects, classifies, and tracks the full range of air threats.

The Oerlikon AESA Multi-Mission Radar from Rheinmetall Italia is an advanced, modular radar that offers superior performance, simple operation, and integration into a variety of platforms. Multiple threats can be tracked and classified simultaneously. The Oerlikon AMMR is designed for stationary or mobile operation under the most challenging environmental and interference conditions and is equipped with the latest Electronic Counter-Counter-Measures (ECCM) functions. The radar is fully software-defined, making it easy to configure for specific operational scenarios as well as future mission requirements. The radar can be easily upgraded to respond to future and changing threat scenarios.

In February 2022, Rheinmetall Italia successfully held an open day event showcasing the new Oerlikon AMMR. The event was attended by representatives of all four branches of the Italian Armed Forces - Army, Air Force, Navy, and Carabinieri - as well as representatives of the National Arms Authority, the Defense Staff, the Italian State Police, and the Office of the Italian Prime Minister.
