An international customer has awarded Rheinmetall a follow-up contract for the delivery of armored vehicle kits of the Fuchs 2 type. The volume of this new contract, which also includes initial spare parts requirements, amounts to approximately 250 million EUR. Delivery will take place between 2021 and 2023, with final assembly in the customer's country. Thus, a successful strategic partnership enters a new, promising phase.
The contract holds special significance for the Kassel location, the birthplace of the proven 6x6 vehicle. Last year marked the 40th anniversary of the Fuchs as a versatile three-axle carrier vehicle in the Bundeswehr.
To date, around 1,600 Fuchs vehicles have been built. Armed forces of numerous nations use them in different variants, such as for troop transport, command post, ambulance, and NBC reconnaissance. The Bundeswehr has been using the Fuchs 1 since 1979 in a variety of versions and also had over 100 vehicles of the Fuchs 1 type deployed in Afghanistan. The derived Fuchs 2 is an evolution which features an enlarged interior, a more powerful engine, modernized chassis, improved modern protection, and digital vehicle electronics.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FUCHS! All about the Fuchs celebrating its 40th birthday.
Meanwhile, the Bundeswehr has also modernized a part of its Fuchs 1 fleet. The most modern version, Fuchs 1A8, provides significantly improved protection against mines and IEDs compared to older models, while also increasing the ballistic protection of the vehicles. Key modifications of the Fuchs 1A8 include structural changes to the hull, new seats and seat suspensions in the crew compartment for decoupling from the hull floor, reinforcements in the wheel housings, doors, and window mounts, as well as additional storage boxes and reinforcements in the exterior. The Bundeswehr currently has around 940 Fuchs vehicles, with 272 at the current 1A8 standard.
Rheinmetall also offers the further modernized version 1A8 Plus, featuring a new power unit, new transfer gearbox, new braking system, improved steering system, and a monitor and camera vision system. This makes the Fuchs 1A8 Plus even more maneuverable off-road and more ergonomic to operate. The Fuchs 1A8 Plus can be achieved either by retrofitting existing vehicles or by new production.
