Still this year, the Defence Forces Special Operations Command of the Estonian military will change their service weapons. The new weapons are the Heckler & Koch 416 assault rifle and the Glock 19 pistol.
“The H&K 416 is the weapon of a fighting soldier. Accuracy, reliability in difficult conditions, easy handling, and the necessary accessories for Special Forces are crucial. This led to the Special Operations Command choosing this weapon among many other high-quality weapons,” said Lieutenant Colonel Margus Kuul, Commander of the Special Operations Command.
Even until now, the Estonians were "German" armed: Until 2021, the Special Operations Command used the Heckler & Koch G-36 assault rifle and the USP pistol, both of which were used by Estonian special forces in operations in Afghanistan.
The main task of the Special Operations Command, which is directly subordinated to the Commander of the Defence Forces, is to develop unusual military capabilities in Estonian national defense. The unit's tasks also include special reconnaissance and surveillance tasks, military support, and direct attack tasks.
