OneWeb, a globally operating communications company, introduces a new lightweight User Terminal (UT) designed for mobile and tactical use. The soldier-friendly device, which fits into a backpack, aims to revolutionize field communication in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks.
The new FoldSat Leo Ku OW Mil-Terminal is rugged and designed to fit into most standard backpacks. When folded, it measures 452 x 374 x 114 mm, and when unfolded 855 x 374 x 57 mm.
The FoldSat terminal is manufactured by Inster (Oesia Group) and weighs 11.8 kg. It features a foldable antenna and a slim design. The terminal is optimized for use with OneWeb's Ku-band LEO satellite constellation and is self-aligning. It provides Wi-Fi connectivity up to a distance of 100 meters.
The terminal achieves download speeds of up to 195 Mbit/s and upload speeds of up to 32 Mbit/s. It is also equipped with an external GNSS input for environments without GPS.
The FoldSat can be powered by various external sources such as mains power, a battery, solar panels, or a vehicle battery.
OneWeb plans to launch a global system with 634 satellites in orbit starting next year. Although the system aims to provide global coverage, there are geopolitical gaps, especially in China and Russia.
