Bundeswehr:
New radios will be released later this year
09/27/2024

The Bundeswehr can procure over 6,000 new radios including accessories through the decision of the Budget Committee. Half of the devices are of type AN/PRC-117G and the other half are of type AN/PRC-160. The required approximately 351.4 million euros will be financed through the special fund Bundeswehr and the regular defense budget. The US government is the contracting partner for the purchase.

The radios will be procured for vehicle-independent, dismounted use as a so-called Manpack with backpack, but also for use in vehicles. With PRC radios, the troops can communicate flexibly and extensively over different waveforms, especially in multinational environments. This also improves interoperability – that is, the cooperation between the armed forces of different nations.

Various units of the Bundeswehr will be equipped with the devices. These include units of the airborne forces, Joint Fire Support Teams, as well as special forces and specialized units that need to communicate with allied troops. As part of the "Digitalization of Land-based Operations" (D-LBO) armament program, Bundeswehr units, especially mobile command posts, command vehicles, mobile communication nodes, reconnaissance vehicles, as well as medical and logistics command vehicles, are to be equipped with these radios. The first radios are expected to be delivered this year.

The "Digitalization of Land-based Operations" (D-LBO) armament program involves, for example, the exchange or equipping of radios in existing and future Bundeswehr systems. The main goal is to equip the land forces with modern information and communication tools for Networked Operations (NetOpFü). BWI is the Coordinating Contractor for the armament program, serving as the central authority for preparing conversion projects. The Coordinating Contractor acts as the central hub between the public client and other contractors to coordinate the individual work steps in the area of model and series integration.
