The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support and Rosenbauer Deutschland GmbH recently signed a framework contract for the delivery of up to 60 airport firefighting vehicles. The operation of airports domestically and as part of overseas deployments is a core capability of the Bundeswehr. Domestically, airports are a crucial part of the defense strategy of the Federal Republic of Germany. Without the logistical capability of tactical air transport, overseas deployments would not be feasible. Additionally, ensuring defensive firefighting capabilities is a mandatory requirement for the operation of these numerous airports.
The vehicles used for defensive firefighting in service, under the responsibility of the Air Force, are nearly 50 years old. The vehicles for defensive firefighting domestically have a production year starting from 2005, which justifies the relatively long duration of the closed framework agreement.
With a water tank capacity of 12,500 liters and an extendable firefighting boom arm, the Bundeswehr will receive a highly modern, efficient, and powerful firefighting vehicle for overseas deployments as well as for missions in the context of national and alliance defense. The delivery of the first vehicles is planned for 2026. In total, 35 airport firefighting vehicles are to be procured by 2029.
Choosing a single manufacturer for the performance class (8×8) enables modern fleet management and reduces organizational and bureaucratic overhead. Additionally, training and the required logistics in operation can be streamlined through this approach.
