In missions between life and death, special units need fast and good medical care. That's why from now on, mission doctors accompany the Special Deployment Command (SEK) of the Baden-Württemberg Police - this is unique nationwide.
“The Special Deployment Command of the Baden-Württemberg Police belongs to the best police elite units in Europe. The officers of the SEK manage exceptionally difficult mission situations. Often, it's a matter of life and death. With exceptionally good training and specialized equipment, we protect our SEK officers to the best of our ability. Of course, there can't be 100% protection in life-threatening missions - that's why we are now improving the good and fast medical care during operations: From now on, specially trained mission doctors will accompany our SEK in particularly dangerous missions - this is unique nationwide! These mission doctors can now provide immediate medical care on-site to our police officers and, if necessary, civilian victims,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Thomas StroblThomas Strobl on the appointment of the mission doctors on September 11, 2023.
At a ceremony at the Police Headquarters Operations, the SEK welcomed the three new mission doctors of the SEK. The mission doctors are familiar with the tactics of the special unit and can provide medical assistance in critical and particularly dangerous situations. The licensed doctors with specialist qualifications are now part of the Police Medical Service and serve at the Police Headquarters Operations, to which the SEK belongs. The new doctors had to demonstrate their skills in a demanding selection process. In the future, they will accompany the special unit in missions against armed or particularly dangerous perpetrators, organized and serious crime, terrorism, as well as in rescuing individuals at risk of suicide.
“Our SEK officers also have far above-average knowledge in first aid through regular training and further education. We are now completing this emergency care system with the new mission doctors. With this, we round off the emergency care system and set standards nationwide,” said Minister of the Interior Thomas Strobl.
The SEK mainly focuses on open and covert access operations with a high degree of risk, as well as carrying out police rescue operations in exceptionally dangerous situations. Due to its high tactical and technical standards, the SEK Baden-Württemberg enjoys a very high reputation in national and international comparisons. The SEK Baden-Württemberg is the only special deployment command nationwide to have a police helicopter available at its location in Göppingen. In addition to the GSG 9 of the Federal Police, the SEK of the Baden-Württemberg Police is the only other German special unit represented in the international ATLAS network (network of European special units).
The SEK was founded in May 1976 and has been based at the site of the Bereitschaftspolizeidirektion Göppingen ever since. With the police reform in 2014, the Special Deployment Command and the Mobile Deployment Commands were integrated into the newly created Directorate of Special Units at the Police Headquarters Operations.
