SIG SAUER introduces a new rifle that is essentially the fusion of their success with the NGSW solicitation – the next rifle of the US Army – and the MCX line. The MCX Spear LT sticks with "small caliber" and does not adopt SIG's Army ammunition.
Few things are as constant as the military's desire to modernize its weapons. It seems that the discussion has been going on for decades with timid beginnings here and there. However, that changed in 2017 with the initiation of the Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program. The American military was looking for a serious replacement for the M4 carbine and the light machine gun M249 SAW (both with 5.56mm ammunition) and the 7.62mm machine gun M240. At the end of the solicitation, the winner of the contract was none other than SIG Sauer – we have reported on this. The links to the stories are attached to this article. The new weapons are state-of-the-art and are intended to provide the modern soldier with precision, reliability, and ballistic superiority.
The new machine gun caused quite a stir, but it was the replacement for the old-school M4 that made the most impression. SIG's response was the XM5 MCX SPEAR. This weapon is a version of their popular MCX rifles with several important improvements. Once images of the weapon were released to the public, a cry went through the firearms scene: "I want one too." Since the XM5 is obviously a military weapon, it probably would have always been a dream weapon for the public – although a version for collectors was commercialized. But as befits SIG, they have begun work on a version of the super-sexy XM5 for the commercial market. The product of their work is the MCX-SPEAR-LT.
The MCX-SPEAR-LT is a rifle that is a short-stroke gas piston rifle and has many of the features of its military counterpart. The rifle has a 13-inch lightweight ergonomic handguard with M-LOK attachment points on seven different sides. It uses the same SIG Flat-Blade Match trigger as the XM5 in an oversized trigger guard. The new MCX-SPEAR-LT is also compatible with aftermarket triggers in case the end user decides to make a change.
The weapon features fully ambidextrous, well-integrated controls. The stock is a push-button folder with an integrated cheek rest. Like the XM5, this weapon can also be easily operated suppressed and comes with the SIG QD Flash Hider for suppressors. SIG has not just released one version of the MCX-Spear-LT. The company will soon offer the rifle in a variety of calibers, including 5.56, 7.62×39, and 300 BLK. That is an exciting caliber selection and possibly also a response to CZ's expansion into the western market, which with its very good BREN 2 covers the same caliber choices as well. SIG will also offer the new rifle in traditional rifle configuration as well as an SBR and pistol.
