In the twilight, it is already very difficult to see in the forest, so some night vision technology would be quite useful. Fortunately, IEA Mil-Optics has something for you. The compact and lightweight night vision device NT 940 (MINI-14) as well as the NT 920 (PVS 14) can be used as both observation and add-on devices for day optics. Correcting the point of impact is definitely not necessary.
The NT 940 can be used as an add-on device behind all common telescopic sights. There is a fixed adapter or alternatively a rubber adapter available for this purpose. The mounting takes only 2 seconds and the device is ready for immediate use. The major advantage is that an NT940 can be mounted on different telescopic sights with just one adapter. Also, multiple detachment and attachment to different telescopic sights and weapons can be done without any change in the point of impact. No verification shot or zeroing is required.
With this solution, wild boar can be hunted at long and very long distances without worrying about any changes in point of impact due to the system. The variable magnification range of the telescopic sight can be fully utilized. If the image is too dark, you will need to use an additional infrared laser illuminator.
Due to the ocular mount (add-on) of the NT940, no alterations to the weapon are necessary and the focus can be easily adjusted while aiming. Unlike add-on devices, there is no increased leverage on the telescopic sight objective and any damage to the day optic, mounting, or weapon is guaranteed to be avoided. If needed, the altered eye relief can be easily compensated for with a butt pad.
The NT 940 can also be used for hunting without permission (required for permanently mounted add-on and inline devices) by using a night vision compatible red dot sight (e.g. Eotech) in conjunction with a head harness. This way, the night vision device and weapon are not permanently attached and no permission is needed. Therefore, completely natural shooting at short/medium distances, with a significantly wider field of view, is also possible without any changes in point of impact.
The housing complies with official Mil-Spec standards and due to its quality, it is a widely used device among authorities and armies - especially among the German police and their special units. The NT940 is waterproof up to 20 m and made of high-strength, yet very lightweight, glass fiber reinforced plastic, meeting modern standards. This offers not a "compromise solution," but a professional solution for the demanding hunter.
The possibilities mentioned in the article refer to German law. In Austria, the legal situation for the use of night vision devices for hunting varies depending on the federal state.
