Mobility and firepower: Fire support with Lynx 120

02/18/2022By Redaktion

Rheinmetall has introduced the latest member of this next-generation combat vehicle family with the Lynx 120. The Düsseldorf-based technology company has developed a mechanized fire support variant of the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle. This high-performance combat system is called Lynx 120. The platform combines a proven turret concept and weapon system – based on Rheinmetall's 120 mm smoothbore technology – with the chassis of the Lynx KF 41. The new variant of the Lynx offers the user outstanding capabilities for fire support and anti-tank defense.

The Lynx 120 is an optimal addition for users of the Lynx platform, providing a balanced mix of firepower, mobility, and protection. The use of standard components reduces weight. Flexibly adaptable protection packages are available. The uncomplicated vehicle architecture offers an open "plug-and-play" capability for future combat upgrades – while adhering to and potentially adapting to NATO standards.

In the near future, armed forces will face a variety of threats, including high-tech combat systems. At the same time, conventional solutions and concepts have reached their performance limits. In order to effectively confront future adversaries, the Lynx 120 offers high, track-mobile firepower and the latest protection technologies.

Scalable large-caliber turret concept for the Lynx

The Lynx 120 combines the modular chassis of the Lynx KF 41 and a scalable large-caliber turret concept into a powerful overall system. This once again demonstrates the platform's enormous growth potential and superiority. Just a few months ago, Rheinmetall Defence Australia introduced a Combat Support Vehicle (CSV) variant, now followed by the fire support variant.

The fundamental concept of the Lynx 120 is to provide a combat system that offers maximum operational capability within a reasonable timeframe and at realistic costs, along with logistical advantages.

The main armament is a 120mm smoothbore cannon from Rheinmetall, derived from the proven main armament of the Leopard 2. It is capable of firing the new programmable multipurpose ammunition DM11. The secondary armament consists of a coaxial machine gun. An additional .50 caliber machine gun is mounted on an independent weapon station for the commander.

A 360° camera system with automatic target detection and tracking reduces the crew's workload around the clock in all operational scenarios.

Adaptable protection modules allow for mission-specific adjustment of protection against ballistic threats, improvised explosive devices (IED), explosively formed penetrators (EFP), and artillery fire. The modifications can be made quickly and with only minimal tools. The Lynx 120 integrates the proven Rheinmetall Active Defence System (ADS) for defense against anti-tank missiles and anti-tank guided missiles. Additional armor packages and active protection systems can be provided upon request.

Lynx as a modern alternative

Various nations are currently interested in procuring the Lynx combat vehicle family to replace their aging vehicle fleets. The platform is currently a strong contender in the Australian and Slovakian infantry fighting vehicle modernization programs. The Lynx is also competing in the U.S. Army's Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV) program. Hungary became the first Lynx customer in 2021. In addition to military-strategic aspects such as improving interoperability and enhancing capabilities, all these procurement projects are also aimed at promoting the local defense industry and creating jobs.
