More Route Clearance Systems for the Bundeswehr

05/05/2020By Redaktion

Rheinmetall has been commissioned by the Bundeswehr to supplement four Route Clearance Systems. The order volume amounts to a low double-digit million amount. The contract, concluded in December 2019, has a duration of around four years.

As part of the commissioned work, Rheinmetall will convert five transport tanks Fuchs 1A8 into operator group vehicles and four airborne weapon carriers Wiesel 1 into detector vehicles. The scope of delivery also includes seven reserve dual sensors and other logistical components. The dual sensors, which are a key component of the Route Clearance System, are a new, obsolescence-corrected version.

Rheinmetall had first delivered seven so-called DEU Route Clearance Systems to the Bundeswehr in 2011 as part of the "Heavy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Detachment". A complete system consists of five vehicles, each used for reconnaissance, clearance, and preparation for the disposal of explosive traps by explosive ordnance disposal forces as well as for guidance and transport.

The remotely controlled tracked vehicle Wiesel, which has a newly developed integrated dual sensor with ground radar (Ground Penetrating Radar) and metal detector, is responsible for the detection of mines and explosive traps in the section of road or terrain to be examined in the DEU Route Clearance System.

The Fuchs 1A8 transport tank, mobile and highly protected command post, is used, equipped with control stations for driving control and systems for analyzing the signals of the dual sensor.

The explosive verification vehicle (so-called manipulator) separately commissioned by the Bundeswehr remotely checks suspicious objects. An integrated video system provides the crew on board the Fuchs command vehicle with a direct situational awareness at all times.

Logistics vehicles of the Multi FSA type from Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) are used for the transport of vehicles in the DEU Route Clearance System.
