Kalashnikov.ru reports that a new patent ( RU 2809501 C1 ) has been filed for "Small Weapons Cartridge with Increased Penetration." This involves a new caliber for the AK platform that aims to combine the advantages of the two existing calibers. That is, the familiar 5.45x39 and 7.62x39 could now become 6.02x41. Possibly a response to the American NGSW program ?
The answer is clearly yes. The Americans have opted for a new standard cartridge and associated weapons. The cartridge is the 6.8mm SIG Fury Hybrid (6.8x51). Goal: improved ballistics and increased penetration
To match the new Russian ammunition, there is the AK 22, which uses the 6.02x41 caliber. Due to the new ammunition, the curvature of the magazine has of course also been modified, but closer to the 5.45x39mm magazines
For comparison, the 6.02 caliber still has 500 joules at a distance of 900 meters, while 5.45 or 7.62x39 only has 500 joules at 500 meters.
From left to right in the image: 6.7x45 and 6.5x39 and 6.02x41 from the Tula ammunition factory. Three new (experimental) cartridges with more power.
However, it should be noted that the new patent does not directly mention the 6.02 caliber. The 6.02 caliber is currently being tested, but can of course still be modified in further development.
