MATBOCK partners with the U.S. Army RCCTO to develop a JLTV Hybrid Electric Vehicle prototype, awarded a $6.9M contract for this innovative project.
MATBOCK is known for innovative equipment. But this is a project on a new scale: In partnership with the U.S. Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO), they have been tasked with developing the prototype of a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle Hybrid Electric Vehicle (JLTV HEV), utilizing an M1278A1 Heavy Gun Carrier JLTV as the base platform.
In March 2022, the RCCTO awarded MATBOCK a $6.9 million pOTA (Prototype Other Transaction Authority) contract, including options, for the development and delivery of a JLTV HEV. The main purpose of this project is to validate or negate the feasibility of a tactical hybrid-electric vehicle (HEV) as a prototype. The project aims to increase the overall vehicle performance and range, improve onboard power availability and energy off-platform, and enhance the overall efficiency of the JLTV through additional capabilities.

The JLTV HEV is not only capable of generating additional power, but also has a new capability compared to non-hybrid JLTV variants, by being able to operate in a "silent mobility mode" where only the battery is used, increasing the ability for silent surveillance compared to the non-hybrid JLTV variant.
MATBOCK has set up a new, 4,000 square foot space directly connected to the existing company, dedicated solely to military efforts on hybrid-electric vehicles, including the JLTV HEV. MATBOCK employs nearly 30 staff members to lead this project to success. Leading the charge at MATBOCK is Mike Pilotte, a tank officer in the North Carolina National Guard and an experienced project manager who recently completed a successful Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) with the Special Operations Command (SOCOM). "Undoubtedly, this will be the most complex project that MATBOCK has undertaken in the 12 years of its operation, but we have the right team and core technologies to achieve a successful outcome," said Pilotte.
