The expansion of MARSOC led to the Marines needing to outsource their special forces pistol production. After a tender process, Colt's Close Quarter Battle Pistol won the contract for USD 22.5 million, with plans to produce pistols similar to the M45 MEU(SOC) but in Coyote Tan color.
With the expansion of MARSOC (Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command), the Marines no longer have the parts and capacity to build pistols for their special forces. In the resulting tender, the Close Quarter Battle Pistol from Colt prevailed against competition from Springfield and S&W. The newly manufactured pistols for USD 22.5 million should be very similar to the currently in service M45 MEU(SOC) and only differ visibly by the different color (Coyote Tan).
