2-Gun Action Matches - like the LYNX BRUTALITY competition - are not only very action-packed, but also a bit addictive. Some may still be hesitant to participate. Spencer received a few questions from friends and colleagues who were also at LYNX BRUTALITY 2022. In the SPARTANAT interview, he answers your questions.
But before we get to that, here are a few key facts about Spencer's shooting experience. He has had a firearms license since mid-2020 in Austria, followed by his first gun, a Glock 17 Gen5 towards the end of the same year. "What followed were several shooting courses from different companies," said Spencer, who is also a SPARTANAT editor: "There are reports on our site from some of the courses, especially the TCA and EDELWEISS, where I gained most of my experience. I would like to express my great thanks at this point to TCA for the skills in long gun shooting at the barricade. Also, massive thanks to EDELWEISS for the intensive and diverse pistol training." Experience and training, Spencer knows, pay off in a competition and ultimately also in a possible emergency situation. Here is the interview:
SPARTANAT: How did you fare on the stages in Slovenia?
Spencer: The LYNX BRUTALITY was my first Brutality Match and my first major international competition. I was able to secure a place in the top 10 and am more than satisfied with that. I actually just wanted to gain some experience and had no great expectations, but quickly realized that I performed relatively well in shooting. My biggest problem was fitness, especially on those stages where a lot of strength was required, like throwing sandbags multiple times over the door frame.
LYNX BRUTALITY is a close combat 2-Gun competition, Polenar Tactical tried this in Europe for the first time after Finnish Brutality. Was it successful? What was good about the event?
I had been following Finnish Brutality and some matches in the USA for a while. A core element is always the physical exertion combined with shooting. Accordingly, this thread runs through LYNX BRUTALITY as well, and there were varied stages, each with a core element that made the stages unique. The organization was very good, the participants were divided at the beginning, there were pre-info emails with times, and the stages were always clearly explained by the Range Officers of the Lynx Training Facility. The small on-site trade fair with exhibitors rounded off the package, catering was very good. The huge raffle at the end was the cherry on top, as every participant still on-site won. So, from my perspective, completely successful!
LYNX BRUTALITY started very last minute this year. What else could be improved in the competition?
The lead-up time with date announcement was definitely the biggest point of criticism, which Polenar also took to heart. Whether on-site or online, this was of course addressed. In addition, in a conversation with other participants, it was mentioned that maybe misses could be counted, or some kind of target identification (is the target to be shot Yes No) could be included. From Polenar itself, it was mentioned that they were under tremendous stress and are glad it is over. But as a participant, you didn't notice much of that and had a pleasant competition.
How did your equipment perform "in battle"? Satisfied? Or anything to improve?
Initially, I wanted to start with a plate carrier, but decided at the last minute to go for a Spiritus Micro Rig, out of fear of physical exertion. Fortunately, I didn't have any equipment issues. UF PRO protects my knees and elbows. Wiley X gloves with leather are comfortable to wear. Sharp stones or fast roping were no problem with them. The weapons are also very reliable. My OA15 SL10 rifle works smoothly and the EOTech was accurate. During the competition, I realized that I didn't need magnification for 50 meters, but only for targets over 100 meters. The Glock pistol also had no inhibitions, and the Holosun optic is well adjusted for 15 meters, ensuring good hits. I will probably change the zero to 25 meters here. A red dot optic was a big advantage, especially in combination with the ballistic shield, as the shield's window distorted the sight picture from the iron sights.
Do you already have a date for next time? Will you compete again? And who would you recommend to participate in LYNX BRUTALITY 2?
There is no date set for next time yet. But the plan, of course, is to hold it annually. If my schedule allows, I would love to compete again to see if I have improved. Anyone who wants to participate in LYNX BRUTALITY should blindly follow all 4 basic rules. If these are violated, you will quickly be disqualified from the competition. Also, your weapon handling should already be very good so that you can focus on the stages. Those with experience in shooting one-handed, shooting from barricades, and some fitness can certainly take on a Brutality Match, enjoy it, and gain a lot of experience. In addition to meeting nice people, you also get to know yourself and your equipment better, which builds new confidence in your gear.
