RHEINMETALL has been awarded a contract by the Portuguese Army for the delivery of 1,500 LM-LowProfile laser modules. The order, booked in October 2020, includes the delivery of the devices in three batches. It is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2021. The contract value is in the low single-digit million EUR range. Rheinmetall is closely cooperating with its national distribution partner, the NT Group Portugal, in executing the contract.
Developed by Rheinmetall Soldier Electronics in Stockach on Lake Constance, the very compact LM-LowProfile laser module is designed for use on compact assault rifles but is also suitable for other handheld weapons. The device, weighing only about 160 grams and measuring 85 mm in length, can be mounted on any common assault rifle via a standard interface according to MIL-STD 1913/NATO STANAG 4694. Due to its low profile of 25 mm, it is well-suited for use with day optics and does not interfere with the sight line. Because of the arrangement of the lasers to the barrel axis, this device is especially suitable for weapons with non-removable mechanical sights (rear and front sights). The LM-LowProfile is powered by a CR123 battery and offers a visible and an infrared laser target marker as well as a focusable infrared illuminator. All integrated lasers can be adjusted in parallel using block adjustment. Optionally, the laser module can be remotely operated via a trigger cable or directly on the device using a single button. The LM-LowProfile is waterproof up to 30 meters for up to two hours. The laser module can be enhanced for combat effectiveness by adapting a tactical weapon light. Rheinmetall has also delivered a weapon light to the Portuguese Army in a previous order.
Durign the testing by the Portuguese Army, the LM-LowProfile was able to outperform various competitors due to its ergonomics and performance. The device also offers the great advantage of not being subject to the strict export regulations of the US ITAR regime. The devices are personalized by laser engraving. More Rheinmetall for dismounted soldiers.
