Is the 6.8 revolution continuing in Australia? The US Army has already decided on the new 6.8 x 51 cartridge with the NGSW competition and wants to make the SIG MCX Spear the new assault rifle in that caliber. At LAND FORCES 2022, the Australians show that they are diligent students: Thales has developed a new 6.8 x 51 mm caliber cartridge as well as two weapon prototypes designed to achieve similar performance to the US Army's Next Generation Squad Weapons program.
The cartridge is a conventional casing design that creates high chamber pressure to achieve a similar effect to the NGSW goals. Two different rifle designs have been developed, one a "Super AUG" bullpup (cover photo) and another weapon based on the well-known Stoner pattern (below).
It also appears that the Australians have developed a common magazine for the two variants. Are the Australians doing this just for fun? No: "The Australian standard infantry rifle is to be replaced in the coming years as part of Project LAND159, Tranche 2." The Australians would thus be the second significant Western nation to switch to the new caliber to make their troops' firepower future-proof. More info: THALES IS WORKING ON 6.8MM WEAPON
