The German Federal Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius received Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of Croatia, Ivan Anušić, for an inaugural visit at the Bendler-Block on Monday.
The discussion between both ministers focused on the situation in the Western Balkans, support for Ukraine, and the equipment and modernization of the Croatian armed forces. The Federal Republic of Germany had invited the Republic of Croatia to join the project for joint procurement of Leopard 2A8 battle tanks.
In the afternoon, Anušić and Pistorius signed an agreement in which both countries agree that Croatia will deliver an initial batch of 30 Soviet-made battle tanks and 30 infantry fighting vehicles, as well as spare parts and ammunition from Croatian stocks to Ukraine – with financial support from Germany. The agreement stipulates that the Republic of Croatia will use this financial support for future procurement of Leopard 2A8 battle tanks.
Defense Minister Pistorius stated: "The first tanks are expected to be delivered to Ukraine this year. It is important that we do not waste time in supporting Ukraine." Minister Pistorius added: "Croatia aiming for joint procurement of Leopard 2A8 battle tanks with us strengthens the industrial base of Germany and ensures common standards within NATO."
"The Croatian government and the Ministry of Defense continue to invest in the Croatian armed forces. The Croatian Army will be equipped with modern and powerful Leopard 2A8 battle tanks. This continues the replacement of Soviet-made military equipment with Western-made ones. I am very pleased that we have signed this agreement today, which will allow us, in cooperation with the Federal Republic of Germany, an important ally for us, to procure new military equipment and thereby assist Ukraine," Minister Anušić said.
