Conflicts: Volunteering in the Syrian War

06/01/2018By Redaktion

Syria is the new Spanish Civil War: International volunteers fight on all sides - although nowhere as many as in Daesh. The Islamists get the most fighters - including from Germany. The second largest group from Germany to rotate into the war zone are likely the Kurds, even though little is said about them.

On the other hand, the international volunteers are exotic: The German Christian Haller has already joined the Kurdish YPG twice. In February, he had to watch in Germany as the Turkish army took Afrin. The "Stern" magazine did a feature story with him at the time: "Christian Haller believes that those who kill innocent people do not deserve to live. That's why he fought with the Kurds against the Islamic State. Now Turkey is firing at his former comrades. And Haller sits at home in Germany and despairs at the world." HERE is the STERN feature story about Christina Haller.
