K17 Next-Generation Submachine Gun

Admittedly, our Korean is pretty limited, and we can't read the fine print either. But one thing we can tell you: This is where the new K17 rifle is being unveiled—the one that's set to replace the Korean K1A in the army.

SNT Motiv, a Busan-based defense company, has delivered the first mass-produced units of its next-generation special operations submachine gun (K17) to the military. The move marks the full-scale start of the project to replace the K1A submachine gun, which has been in service for 45 years.

The K17 was the equipment finally selected in the "Special Operations Submachine Gun Type 1 Project" pursued by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA). It passed the military's rigorous test evaluation and received a combat-suitable rating. A total of 15,000 units are scheduled to be supplied to the military in phases from this year through next year.

The new K17 will replace the K1A submachine gun, which has been in service for 45 years since the early 1980s. It will be used not only by special operations units but also across various branches, including artillery, tank crews, armored vehicle drivers, fire direction personnel, medics, signal soldiers, military police, and company-level commanders.

SNT Motiv optimized the K17's weight and barrel length in consideration of various operational environments such as urban warfare and airborne drops, and applied the latest production processes to enhance barrel durability. It also adopted a four-sided Picatinny rail, allowing various mission equipment such as sights and tactical gear to be freely mounted. Operational convenience was strengthened through an ambidextrous operating system usable by both left- and right-handed shooters and a retractable stock.

In particular, a burst-fire function was added to improve accuracy and ammunition efficiency, while parts compatibility was secured so that the existing military maintenance system could be used as is, reducing maintenance and operating costs.

SNT Motiv, a leading domestic manufacturer of small-caliber firearms, plans to actively participate in the next-generation Korean rifle development project to be pursued in the future, based on its K17 mass production experience.

"Based on the technology and experience accumulated while carrying out the Special Operations Submachine Gun Type 1 and Type 2 projects, we will secure competitiveness in the next-generation Korean rifle development project," an SNT Motiv official said. "We will contribute to strengthening national defense capabilities through the development of personal firearms suitable for modern warfare and stable force integration."
