He is a German mine diver. He has a passion for watches. The result is BOMBFROG. The brand brings tactical mission watches to the market in small and reliable quantities. We spoke with Dirk Assmann and wanted to know what BOMBFROG means to him.
SPARTANAT: Dirk, you are a professional mine diver, civilian BOMBFROG. How did you get interested in mission watches?
Dirk Assmann: I have been an active mine diver for 21 years and was already a fan of practical watches before my time in the military. As a mine diver, I was given the IWC Porsche Design watch by my employer back then. A watch that I had to use from then on. Technically, the watch was a disaster. The automatic version looked good, but ran as it pleased. Mostly according to the moon. A state that I, as a mission leader responsible for the lives of my men, could not bear. A reliable watch is crucial for life and death during diving and explosive operations! For this reason, over a long period of time, we found the path to our own watch brand.SPARTANAT: What defines a good mission watch for you?
Dirk Assmann: One must differentiate here. The watch for land missions (digital watch) needs different functions than a diver's watch (automatic/quartz watch). For the digital watch, the functions are crucial. As a lone fighter, one learns to navigate at night in the forest. But not everyone has the opportunity to complete such a demanding course. Therefore, compass, altimeter, stopwatch, and timer are important functions for me in a digital watch. For a diver's watch, what matters to me is a clutter-free dial, accuracy, and good readability at night.SPARTANAT: What models does BOMBFROG offer? Who are your target audiences?
Dirk Assmann: Our product range is growing year by year. As a small family business, we are very proud of this. The individual models of our watches can be viewed on our website. This year, we have for the first time produced a digital watch and the demand is overwhelming. Our target audience is primarily the military and special police units both domestically and internationally. However, we also have in mind outdoor and diving enthusiasts who want to own an affordable and good-looking watch.SPARTANAT: You also produce watches on customer request. Who wears BOMBFROG?
Dirk Assmann: Indeed, we also make watches on customer request. This mostly involves the case color as well as the design of the dial and case back. The majority of our watches are sold with the respective unit logos to special police and military units domestically and internationally. As an example, I would like to mention US Navy SEALs, US Navy EOD Technician, SWE Army EOD, BEL Army EOD, SEK Berlin, Combat Swimmers, Mine Divers, MEK HH. I want to explicitly point out that the watches are not procured professionally, but are ordered and purchased by the members of the unit themselves from us.
SPARTANAT: On a personal note: what do you wear yourself? And what is the ultimate mother of all mission watches for you?
Dirk Assmann: I switch between two watches. I wear the DW-15 on duty when I work with explosives, and the BT25 Version 4 when I have to fulfill my job at a depth of 54m underwater. Because for both, I need a watch that I can trust 100 percent!
