Rheinmetall has been contracted by the Swedish company BAE Systems Bofors AB to deliver 48 all-terrain HX trucks with protected vehicle cabins. The highly mobile 8x8 military vehicles from Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) will serve as carriers for the Archer artillery systems of the Swedish Armed Forces. The contract, signed in March 2024, has a value of approximately 71 million EUR. Delivery is set to begin in the third quarter of 2024 and be completed by the end of 2027.
In addition to the vehicles, the contract also includes service and maintenance services. The robust HX vehicles are specifically adapted to the requirements of a 155mm wheeled howitzer, such as withstanding the pressure wave during firing, and they also offer a high degree of off-road capability. The specially hardened Rheinmetall IAC cabin significantly contributes to the protection of the crew during operations in high-risk scenarios. As part of the Swedish Army's order, the serial integration of the Archer system on the HX platform is being carried out for the first time.
The system integration is taking place at BAE Systems Bofors AB. Currently, the Archer artillery system is in use with the Swedish Armed Forces on a 6x6 platform, which will be replaced by the new HX 8x8 systems.
Highly mobile HX2 series trucks from RMMV have been in high numbers in service with the Swedish Armed Forces for over ten years - as logistic trucks and as carrier vehicles for the Patriot air defense missile system. Due to the "family concept" in the HX vehicle family, the new artillery system can be seamlessly integrated into the existing logistics of the Swedish Armed Forces, which already have HX military trucks.
With this current contract, Rheinmetall is making a further contribution to increasing interoperability within NATO. Vehicles from the HX family are being introduced in a growing number of armed forces of the defense alliance and allied nations. In addition to Sweden, other nations like Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, Denmark, Austria, and Norway use HX military trucks in high numbers and in different configurations. The use of similar systems offers synergy potential in the areas of training, operations, maintenance, and repair.
