You know the guy. Not because he has such a beautiful face, but because he is quite a target figure. The cardboard buddy is the standard shooting target from Viking Tactics (VTAC), founded in the USA by former Delta operator Kyle Lamb. In Germany, there is VTAC Germany, but they do not operate under this name, because some people would probably expect Kyle Lamb. Oliver Falk from VTAC Germany works as a trainer under the abbreviation HunTac. We already attended the "Defensive Pistol 1.0" course last year at the Raumschießanlage HESA in Wiener Neustadt, Austria.
Oliver Falk, here in the foreground with training device, has prepared a lot for this. The course lasts three days, a total of 24 hours. Requirement: 1,000 basic shots. In the end, there will have been more. Program according to the description: "In addition to the safe and robust handling of the handgun in a 360° environment and the fundamental shooting skills for the quick and precise termination of a life-threatening attack, this course teaches participants the tactical, legal and psychological foundation for armed self-defense." Target audience (behind the gun): civilian gun owners, police officers, or employees of security companies. This also describes quite accurately the composition of the group of 10, who set out to learn in Wiener Neustadt.
A man has to set goals for himself, Defensive Pistol 1.0 makes that clear. And so the group works its way up from the basics - until it becomes clear, life is full of obstacles.
Some of these obstacles are self-inflicted: dummy rounds are part of the basic equipment and find their way into each magazine multiple times. This automates stress-resistant error correction. The speed of reloading also corresponds to the increasingly faster and more self-confident shots.
The opponent is not always a target straight in front of you. What if he goes to the ground? The target mounted below teaches the shooter to aim and stay focused on the danger posed by the opponent on the ground.
Some of the most common obstacles standing around in public spaces are cars. And so the fleeing person cannot drive away quickly with them, they are ideal cover. Oliver Falk demonstrates here how to use them to observe and shoot - while staying as hidden as possible.
It could just as easily happen that the man is inside the car when a threat occurs. Limited space, obstructive seatbelt, restrictions in the shooting field... suddenly everything is different. In the HunTac course, the participant can experience how that feels and how to handle it as a shooter.
Controlled learning means that the trainer Oliver Falk is always there, monitoring and correcting every step. The fast pace at which the course takes place does not diminish the precision of the teaching.
The classroom also plays a role, but a small one. All theory is gray, but it is necessary and provides the shooters with essential information on what their shot can do, what the legal backgrounds and possibilities are.
No, the course participants aren't getting into fights and trying to beat each other up. The fight for the boxing pad is intentional, meant to raise their heart rate, tire them out, exhaust them, because then...
... the danger awaits the course participants and they have to make decisions. Hostages everywhere. Or innocent people? Some of them with gestures that are hard to interpret, where it's not clear if they are actually a threat.
The trainee doesn't know what's lurking behind the door. How do you get in without immediately incapacitating yourself? Every corner presents its own challenge, to be overcome under the watchful eyes of Oliver Falk. Afterwards, there is thorough maneuver critique.
And there are also interruptions that are as entertaining as they are educational. The block of soap is a legitimate target, because it helps everyone see how differently various types of ammunition work. Different bullet paths are clearly visible.
These are the projectiles for it. And it is extremely exciting and instructive that in this course, participants deal with how different types of ammunition actually work. The vivid nature of the training is convincing.
Three very intense days with trainer Oliver Falk from HunTac/VTAC Germany, very good people in the course, and an excellent teacher who practices dynamically and at a fast pace with his students. There is no impression that the breaks are too long. The Defensive Pistol 1.0 program is really packed. Oliver Falk convinces in knowledge transfer and as an exercise leader with a keen eye. At the same time, he is relaxed and ready for a conversation, shortly after the course begins he and his students become a cohesive team that enjoys the course and the always new challenge. Overall, an excellent course with an outstanding trainer that is worth attending.
