HENSOLDT: Major orders for army air defense

07/31/2024By Redaktion

Rheinmetall Air Defence has commissioned HENSOLDT to supply SPEXER anti-aircraft radars for use in the new anti-aircraft cannon tank (FlakPz) Skyranger 30. The order is worth nearly 100 million euros.

Rheinmetall Air Defence is introducing the Skyranger 30 as the successor to the Gepard FlakPz in the newly established army air defense unit of the German Bundeswehr. With the SPEXER 2000 radar, the effectors of the new FlakPz can unleash their full capabilities due to its high detection performance. Crucial for this is the extraordinarily high quality of target classification and the ability to accurately track targets even while on the move or in flight. Following a framework contract signed in 2023 with Rheinmetall Air Defence, the SPEXER 2000M 3D MkIII radar is part of Rheinmetall's offering to various end users.

The now commissioned radars will equip the Skyranger tanks of Germany and Austria. Denmark has also announced a similar procurement. The German Skyranger 30 is based on the GTK Boxer, additionally equipped with the Stinger missile. The Austrian system is based on the Pandur EVO. In addition to the 30mm revolver cannon, the Austrian Skyranger 30 will be equipped with the Mistral missile.

The SPEXER radar family offers high-performance surveillance radars for various ranges for the automatic detection and classification of ground, sea, and low-flying air targets. The SPEXER 2000 is used, among others, in German programs such as cUAS Field Camp (ASUL), qualified air defense, HoWiSM (High-Energy Laser for Drone Defense), and NNbS.

HENSOLDT has decades of experience with radar systems for air defense and actively drives the development of key technologies in this field. The company's portfolio includes, besides SPEXER, the high-performance TRML-4D radar proven in Ukraine, the passive radar Twinvis, and radars for securing ship and air traffic. Both TRML-4D and SPEXER are part of the air defense system commissioned in January for the close and very close range protection of the Bundeswehr.
