Large ammunition packages for the Bundeswehr

The Bundeswehr is increasing its operational stockpile with additional ammunition, including for the Ukrainian armed forces. Framework contracts have been signed for various calibers, with a focus on 155mm shells and tank ammunition. The procurement also includes fuses and propellant modules. This initiative aims to replenish stocks, enhance training capabilities, and ensure long-term supply coverage. Learn more on the Bundeswehr website.

The Bundeswehr is receiving additional ammunition to increase its operational stockpile and for training purposes. Additional ammunition is also being procured for the Ukrainian armed forces, and the projectiles already delivered there are being replaced. Annette Lehnigk-Emden, the President of the Federal Office of Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw), has signed several framework contracts for this purpose and has called off ammunition with different calibers from existing framework contracts. Prior to this, the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag approved the projects.

The artillery troops are receiving 155mm caliber ammunition. Corresponding framework contracts for delivery have been concluded for this purpose.

An existing framework contract for 155mm caliber explosive shells has been expanded. At the same time, additional ammunition has been called off, with a large part expected to be delivered within this year. This ammunition can be fired in combat, for training, and for practice purposes with the Panzerhaubitze 2000.

Also - financed from the regular defense budget and from the German government's modernization initiative - new fuses for the 155mm shells and various propellant modules are being procured. In addition to the increased domestic demand, materials are also being re-procured which were previously supplied to Ukraine. The fuses are being called off from a framework contract signed in 2021.

Furthermore, rounds of 120mm tank ammunition in various configurations have been ordered for the Leopard 2 combat tank. The call-off was made from an existing framework contract, with a short-term and extensive delivery planned.

In addition to the order now triggered, this framework contract has also been expanded simultaneously. This allows for various types of combat and practice rounds to be called off beyond the year 2025. This replenishes the Bundeswehr's stocks and can, at the same time - depending on the need - increase the ammunition reserves.

The newly signed framework contract also includes a delivery of tank ammunition for the Ukrainian armed forces.

Additional ammunition in the NATO standard caliber 30mm x 173 has been called off from an existing framework contract for the Puma infantry fighting vehicle. These cartridges are multipurpose ammunition used for engaging ground and air targets.

Training rounds in the caliber 7.62mm x 51 for the MG3 and MG5 machine guns can be procured through a newly signed framework contract to replenish the Bundeswehr's stocks. Previously, training or practice ammunition in this caliber was acquired through individual procurement contracts. However, the Bundeswehr now plans to make larger-scale purchases to improve availability for the troops and provide more planning security to the industry. To ensure the future supply coverage of the Bundeswehr, the framework agreement also includes an annual minimum delivery quantity agreed with the manufacturer.
