The UK plant of Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land and KMW subsidiary WFEL will be the main production sites. The Boxer is a versatile and highly protected 8x8 wheeled vehicle, set to become a standard within NATO.
A consortium of Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) is set to produce Boxer armored vehicles worth around 2.6 billion EUR (2.3 billion GBP) for the British Armed Forces. A corresponding contract from the British Ministry of Defence has now been signed with the consortium company Artec through the European defense agency OCCAR.
The contract, signed within the scope of the British defense project "Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)," includes over 500 vehicles, with 50% of the order volume allocated to Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann each. This increases the total number of Boxers delivered or under contract by Artec to over 1,400 vehicles.
The British Army will receive Boxer vehicles in the variants of troop transporter, command vehicle, ambulance, and specialist carrier. The delivery of the armored 8x8 vehicles is expected to begin by the end of 2022 and be completed by 2031.
A large portion of the production activities will need to be carried out in the UK. After a series launch in Germany, around 90 percent of the Boxer vehicles for the British Army will be manufactured on the British island. The main production sites will be the UK plant of Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land and KMW subsidiary WFEL.
With this procurement decision, the UK returns to a European defense program after a long hiatus, to which the country was already a member in the early stages of the Boxer's development. The Boxer is on track to become a standard vehicle within NATO.
Modular vehicle - versatile and proven in the field
The Boxer is a highly protected 8x8 wheeled vehicle. Its modular architecture allows for a variety of variants not seen in any other vehicle system. So far, around 700 vehicles in twelve different versions are under contract in three NATO countries: Germany, the Netherlands, and Lithuania. Recently, the first Boxer vehicle was delivered to the Australian Army, a NATO ally, out of a total of 211 units. All information about the Boxer at Rheinmetall.
The Artec GmbH was founded in 1999. It is a joint venture of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co. KG, Rheinmetall Military Vehicles GmbH, and Rheinmetall Defence Nederland B.V. It coordinates series production and serves as a contact point for all export-related issues regarding the Boxer.
