The patents for a GLOCK assault rifle - HERE is the SPARTANAT Report on the GLOCK Carbine - have caused quite a stir, especially internationally. We looked into what our friends from abroad have to say about it and found out more.
The main design depicted in the patents shows a rotating bolt and bolt carrier based on Eugene Stoner's influential AR-18 design. The weapon is likely planned in common rifle calibers, and some of the patent drawings suggest a standard 5.56x45mm caliber. The design appears to be mainly the work of experienced small arms designer Elmar Bilgeri, perhaps best known for his work on the Steyr Scout Rifle.

You may be wondering what exactly is a ring piston. Simply put, it is a piston positioned around the barrel, unlike traditional systems above or below it. The piston moves longitudinally along the barrel when propelled by propellant gases exiting the barrel through the gun's gas port(s). Although this system is less commonly used, the concept has a long history.
Among the earlier rifle designs that used the system is the Walther A115, developed in the mid-1930s. Using some advanced manufacturing techniques and design concepts for the time, the A115 had an annular gas piston arrangement surrounding the barrel with a small gas chamber at the front end.
The most successful rifle with a ring piston is the Czech vz.52, which has a gas port in the middle of the barrel that leads to an annular piston head, which then acts on the operating sleeve to actuate a pair of push rods that act on the rifle's bolt. The vz.52 is probably the most battle-tested design using this system.

Overall, the various specialized magazines haven't been able to find out much more than we have, but they all agree on one point: it is uncertain whether the GLOCK assault rifle will ever be released. No wonder, unlike us, they don't know that the GLOCK carbine already exists.
Don't get too excited, because although the patents prove that Glock has been working on a rifle design, it doesn't mean we will see it anytime soon.

The patent filings for a GLOCK carbine may be genuine, but that doesn't mean we will see a production model anytime soon. If at all.

So, what does all this mean? Possibly nothing. Companies regularly file patents for new inventions as part of an R&D process. Does this mean a finished product will ever hit the market? Not necessarily. However, it appears that Glock is very open to the concept of manufacturing long guns and has a talented and experienced team in Austria burning the midnight oil to make the dream a reality.

Companies and individuals constantly file patents, so the existence of these patents does not guarantee that we will see them - but there is some hope.
