Protected transport of the wounded: First serial model presented

The Bundeswehr Medical Service is implementing a new capability for protected patient transport with the introduction of the GVTC. This container can accommodate up to eight stabilized patients and two medical personnel, featuring enhanced emergency medical care capabilities and meeting Intermediate Care standards. The GVTC can be mounted on existing Bundeswehr truck platforms, eliminating the need for a new carrier vehicle. Testing is underway to confirm system requirements are met, with delivery of the GVTCs expected between 2024 and 2026.

As part of the information exercise of the Bundeswehr Medical Service, the contractor Airbus Defence and Space presented the first production model of the protected casualty transport container (GVTC). The first so-called validation model was handed over to the Bundeswehr in mid-April of last year and is currently being examined by the responsible authorities to determine whether the original requirements set by the Bundeswehr for the system are being met. Completion of this testing phase is expected by September of this year.

Through this procurement, the Bundeswehr will have an additional capability for the protected transport of patients overland. The GVTC can transport up to eight previously stabilized patients - plus two places for medical personnel - for outpatient or inpatient treatment.

The included medical equipment allows for enhanced emergency medical care and monitoring of patients. In addition, the "Intermediate Care" medical standard is ensured, allowing medication to be administered as an infusion solution, vital signs to be monitored, and ventilation for up to two people.

The containers can be mounted on protected truck platforms with interchangeable loading systems already in service with the Bundeswehr. This eliminates the need for a new carrier vehicle.

The GVTC consists of a 20-foot ISO container weighing 13.5 tons. Due to the high protection requirements, the container is equipped with systems for NBC protection ventilation, as well as protection against threats from gunfire or explosives.

The Bundeswehr Procurement Office timely commissioned the production and delivery of twelve production containers and one validation model. The project has a financial volume of nearly 40 million euros. The GVTCs are scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2026.
