Rheinmetall has been awarded a contract from an international partner to supply kits for armored vehicles of the Fuchs 2 type. Manufacturing will take place in the partner country. The current follow-up orders also include conversion kits and the delivery of spare parts packages. The volume of the contract is in the triple-digit million EUR range. It was booked in December 2023. The kits and conversion kits will be delivered between 2024 and 2028.
The manufacturing facility in the partner country has seen an increase in value added in recent years, as well as investments to ensure machining, welding, and surface treatment processes. This strategic and long-standing partnership is entering a new, promising phase, which also includes the possibility of future exports of Fuchs 2 vehicles from the partner country.
With this large order, the success story of the Fuchs 2 continues. The Fuchs has been in use by the German Armed Forces as a versatile 6x6 armored personnel carrier for almost half a century.
To date, a total of around 1,800 Fuchs vehicles have been built. Armed forces of numerous nations use them in various configurations, such as personnel carriers, command post vehicles, ambulances, and for NBC reconnaissance. The German Armed Forces have been using the Fuchs 1 since 1979 in a variety of versions. More than 100 Fuchs 1 vehicles were deployed in Afghanistan, among other places. The Fuchs 2 is an evolution of the Fuchs 1, with an enlarged interior, a more powerful engine, a modernized chassis, enhanced modern protection, and digital vehicle electronics.
The German Armed Forces have a total of around 940 Fuchs vehicles, of which 272 are of the 1A8 model. Even this Fuchs 1 version provides significantly improved protection against mines and improvised explosive devices compared to older models, while also increasing the ballistic protection of the vehicles. Key modifications of the Fuchs 1A8 include structural changes to the hull, new seats and seat suspensions in the crew compartment for decoupling from the hull floor, reinforcements to the wheel wells, doors, and window mounts, as well as additional storage compartments and reinforcements in the exterior area.
