Generation Z in uniform

The Bundeswehr’s personnel numbers are rising, and interest in a military career is growing among young people—but are they a good fit for the Bundeswehr? Prof. Dr. Martin Elbe, a military sociologist at the ZMSBw, and Lt. Col. Michael Gutzeit discuss the military socialization of young people.

About 10,000 young people born between 1995 and 2010 are beginning voluntary military service this year. They are members of what is known as Generation Z. This generation is persistently labeled with the stereotype of being more self-centered and hedonistic than socially minded and responsible. Many publications therefore debate whether the lives of young people in Germany today are even compatible with military service in the Bundeswehr.

Not a Contradiction, but a Synergy

Research in military sociology conducted by the ZMSBw, however, demonstrates that Generation Z and military service are not inherently contradictory but rather engage in a constructive synergy. Social science studies, such as the “Applicant Study” from 2022, have shown that the younger generation prioritizes intrinsic values above all else. Motives such as the desire to serve the state, adherence to values, and the experience of challenges while serving in the Bundeswehr were at the forefront. The focus on family, friends, relationships, and having a clear conscience regarding one’s own actions are also traditional values rooted in a strong sense of community. So how far apart are Generation Z and the Bundeswehr really? The sociological answer is: there are similarities, but also differences.

Prof. Dr. Martin Elbe is a military sociologist at the ZMSBw and conducts research on personnel, organization, violence, health, and sports. He has over 25 years of teaching experience as a professor and adjunct lecturer at numerous universities. His research focuses on social psychology and research methodology.
