Practical: when approached, you can pretend to be on the phone the whole time ... Rheinmetall has presented the innovative irritant projectile Spectac, a cube-shaped flashbang grenade. It has been specifically developed as a tool for military and police special forces. The outstanding feature of the handy Spectac is its "smartphone design". The safety ring and plunger detonator are embedded in the square housing the size of a mobile phone.
The novel design offers several advantages. The approximately 350-gram, 110 mm long, 68 mm wide, and 20 mm high flashbang grenade can be very ergonomically stored and transported in tactical equipment. It can also be discreetly carried during undercover or personal protection operations in civilian clothing. In addition, the cuboid shape offers further tactical advantages. Unlike traditional round projectiles, the Spectac does not roll uncontrollably after landing, but quickly stays in place. This provides tactical advantages, for example, in stair operations. The maximum range of movement is only up to 35 cm. As a result, it reliably achieves its desired effect in the target area.
The water-resistant Spectac, up to 20 meters deep, works with a bright flash and a deafening bang. It is currently available at sound pressure levels of 170 and 180 decibels and with two delay times - 0.5 and 1.5 seconds. To increase handling safety, the Rheinmetall designers have relied on the proven Bottom Top Venting (BTV) technology for the Spectac: the effect is vented at the top and bottom of the projectile so that the throwing hand is protected in case of accidental ignition. The Spectac does not produce dangerous fragments. Each individual Spectac grenade is also x-rayed before delivery to ensure maximum operational safety. The X-ray images are stored for ten years. The igniter and delay element do not contain lead compounds. In addition, the grenade complies with the requirements of the European Chemicals Regulation REACH. Of course, the good training of the special forces is important: in stressful situations, always throw the Spectac, not the phone. And don't let it go off next to your ear while "talking" on the phone. 180 dB exceeds the experience of a rave night next to the bass towers.
The Spectac was successfully qualified at the end of 2020 and is now available. With the Spectac, Rheinmetall underscores its leading role in the field of pyrotechnic effectors for police and armed forces.
